Another half an hour passed and everyone was still eating and listening to Tony describe his less-than-harrowing tenure in the local jail. As Maiden had suggested earlier, Greg stayed with him most of the time and slipped him enough doughnuts to send an elephant into a sugar coma.

“I think I’ll be the only person to leave jail fatter than he went in,” Tony chuckled and patted his trim stomach.

Vonny smiled weakly. The reassurance would be welcome, but the reminder that he’d been thrown into a sterile jail cell at all was obviously still painful for her. Maiden vaguely wondered if her sister would be nicer to Greg after he loyally looked after Tony; she doubted it.

There was a knock at the door and the conversation paused, except for Bella and Amelia who were cackling as they tried to decide which of their favorite actors had the nicest backside.

Maiden, happy enough to get away before being pressed into casting a vote, went to the door and checked the peephole. She quickly opened the door when she saw Greg standing in the hall, still in uniform.

“Hey,” she smiled nicely and stepped aside, “come in. Tony was just telling us how much you helped him.”

“You’re the one that helped.” Greg smiled as he walked in and looked around. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“Don’t be silly, Gregory!” Gloria smiled and waved him over to the table. “Sit down and eat somethin’, sweetheart.”

He returned the smile and walked over as requested. After giving the seat next to Vonny a dubious look, he walked around and took Maiden’s seat next to Alfie. Maiden smiled quietly as she walked over to sit by her sister.

“So,” Gloria said eagerly as she loaded up a plate and set it in front of the young officer, “how’s the investigation goin’? Do you have any idea who did it yet?”

Even Greg automatically looked at Maiden when that question was asked. Her eyes widened incredulously before she glanced away to study the ceiling.

The questions for Greg quickly resumed; Maiden pretended to study her cuticles. Beyond noting that they did actually need some work, she mostly listened to the others while pretending she wasn’t interested.

Greg deflected most of Gloria and Bella’s inquiries, sometimes cramming his mouth full of food and mumbling while shaking his head helplessly. Maiden felt the curious looks she was still getting and made a point of not asking anything; she was determined to keep right out of it.

Maiden clamped her mouth shut as Amelia again asked what clues they’d uncovered and how long it would take to track the killer down. Greg was a professional; he should be perfectly capable of fending off a few nosy friends without her help.

He actually did quite well; he politely and almost firmly informed the eagerly waiting ladies that details of a homicide investigation were strictly confidential. He then spoiled all his efforts when he turned to Maiden and leaned towards her across the table.

“So, Mae, guess what?” Greg leaned closer still and lowered his voice a tad.
